TUNNEL FIRE SPECTER SPARKS MANY SAFETY PROGRAMS

After the major fire in the Transbay tunnel of Bay Area Rapid Transit in 1979, all North American subway systems are giving increased attention to fire prevention and fire fighting. These have included changes in tunnel cables, water supply and venting, in emergency training for transit employees, and in new coordination with municipal emergency services. Two handbooks for design, UMTA's Subway Environmental Design Handbook and APTA's Guidelines for Design of Rapid Transit Facilities, will soon be supplemented by a new water piping standard for fixed guideway transit by National Fire Protection Association.
