TRAINING OF MERCHANT MARINE PERSONNEL IN THE HANDLING OF HAZARDOUS CARGOES

One feature of the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies that has brought world attention is the philosophy of presenting course materials in a practical and currently useful manner and supplementing this approach by hands-on training and simulator experience. It is not by coincidence that since 1972 many other maritime schools have followed the MITAGS lead in the choice of simulators. In addition to the All-Weather Navigation Simulator, Liquid Cargo Simulator, Engine Room and Automated Bridge Simulator now in use, construction is currently underway to provide facilities for two shiphandling simulators, a Cryogenic Cargo Simulator, and a Hazardous Cargo Trainer/Laboratory. Courses offered at the Institute cover a wide range including Admiralty Law/Ship's Business, Shipboard Medical Care, and Licence Advancement, but of particular importance is the Marine Cargo Operations Program that extends into the area of hazardous cargoes and is the focus of this paper.
