MEETING THE NEED OF GM RESEARCH LABORATORIES
The activities of the General Motor Research Laboratories Library are described to illustrate the expansion of special library services that has occurred in recent years due to the "information explosion." Extensive use of is made of on line systems. Not only are computer searches made of the various on line data bases, but information from the OCLC on line catalogue is used to facilitate interlibrary loans by locating needed documents. Another service of the library is its own data base, the System on Automotive Safety Information (SASI), which abstracts and indexes in depth material from nine broad areas: motor vehicles, emissions and control, vehicle and highway safety, traffic engineering and science, driver education and legislation, accident analysis and prevention, human factors and injury research, vehicle noise and control and fuel-economy and energy conservation.
