TRENDS IN TRAFFIC DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
The paper examines recent trends in the collection and use of traffic data. Microprocessors enable a comprehensive range of traffic data to be obtained. The results of surveys to establish central government data requirements are included. Time, cost and error may be reduced by providing data in computer compatible form for further analysis. A description of the present methods of analysing the '50-point' census data is given, together with details of data vetting. Reservations are expressed concerning the automatic data collection techniques now becoming possible, particularly with regard to the quantity and quality of data. The availability of microprocessor 'intelligence' at the roadside could allow traffic management/control to be responsive to immediate conditions and circumstances. (a) (TRRL) no 245918.
