Projecting Changes in Mobility-Challenged Populations in North Dakota, 2005-2025

In this study, the cohort-component method of population projection is used to project changes in the size of various groups at five-year intervals from 2005 to 2025 for each of North Dakota's 53 counties. The populations of interest in the study, seniors, the disabled, students age 5 to 19, and households without vehicles, traditionally face greater mobility challenges than other members of their community. The objective of the study is to generate data that will aid in future public transportation research and policy making in the state. The paper includes a summary of relevant, existing data to assist in the understanding of the current size and distribution of populations of interest in North Dakota. Next, the conceptual framework behind the cohort-component method of population projection and its mechanics are reviewed. Finally, projections of age-gender groups and mobility-challenged populations by county calculated at five-year intervals from 2005 to 2025 are presented.
