ELECTRIC TRACTION LINES FROM THEIR ORIGIN TO THE 300 KM/H
LIGNES DE TRACTION ELECTRIQUE DE L'ORIGINE AU 300 KM/H
An outline of the two systems of fixed facilities for electric traction (catenaries) used in France for current collection, this is, the 1.5 kV dc system and the 50 Hz 25 kV ac system, is given. The first system, with generalization of polygonal catenary and overvalued copper cross-section has permitted better managing of the problems raised by increased speeds and hauled loads and has led, still with the same purpose, to the adoption of the 50 Hz, 25 kV system which is simpler and allows a significant reduction in weight of the catenaries and a consequent saving. This is the solution for the future which has been chosen in particular, with some changes, for the new Paris-South-East line (Paris-Sud-Est). Information on the problems posed by protection and maintenance of catenaries is presented.
