NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE SAFEGUARDS UNDERGROUND CABLE WITH LOCATOR

The maintenance department of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority is using Sheath Fault and Cable Locator equipment to find and stake out underground communications cable accurately so that construction crews can avoid inadvertent and costly damage to the turnpike's vital communications system. The equipment is also useful in pinpointing sheath faults, especially where unfilled type cable is used. When construction is planned near a cable run, the turnpike engineers first refer to the cable layout plans and then use the Dynatel 573 to precisely locate the cable and mark its route. To use the system for sheath fault location, the user employs a light-weight earth contact frame and the hand-held receiver. The fault direction meter reads either red or green, indicating the direction of the fault.
