INVESTIGATING BRIDGE SCOUR
Bridge scour, often neglected, can result in catastrophic failure or at least in pier settlement and span misalignment. In addition to the inspection of visible portions of bridges, foundation elements and adjacent river bottoms should also be examined at intervals. The mechanics of scour and methods of sounding river beds, along with the interpretation or results, are discussed.
