CARGO HANDLING SHIFT TO "LANDLOCKED PORTS"
The Inland Clearance Depot (ICD) is a major element now in the overall transport chain. It plays a signal role in the steamlining of cargo movement in unit form -- promoting fast turn-arounds of capital-intensive container ships and roll on-roll off vessels at their "concentrated" ports of call. But the shipping consortia-owned facilities are going out for more third-party traffic, intensifying an already healthily competitive service industry. The article discusses characteristics of the ICD, equipment, labor, and other aspects of the subject.
