TRAFFIC EDUCATION IN NEW ZEALAND
Since 1938 the New Zealand Ministry of Transport has been responsible for road safety instruction in schools. The aims and objectives of this work, with a child-centred approach to the subject since 1971, are discussed. Road safety staff are encouraged to base children's learning on activities, such as walking and cycling skills, acting and films, and the need for cooperation with school teaching staff is emphasised. Traffic education is presented as part of a social study of man's motorized environment and the need for a flexible approach to the content of the syllabus is stressed. The respective roles of road safety instructors and school teachers are discussed. (TRRL)
