HIGH CAPACITY SIGNAL DESIGN
West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council have turned to the use of ground-level schemes controlled by signals, to replace some grade-separated urban highway schemes of a much greater capital cost. Because of the numerous conflicts at ground level it is necessary to extract the maximum capacity from the signalled junctions in such schemes. One technique is to spread out some of the conflicts in "space", resulting in more, but simpler, signalled junctions. Using appropriate co-ordination it is possible, for example, to spread out a three-input conflict into its three "component" junctions in such a manner as to provide 50 per cent more "green-time" than a conventional "three-stage" junction, with no additional delay to traffic. In this manner it is possible to design low-cost systems of "component" junctions to alleviate potential signal problems, provided that signal capacity investigations are carried out before land commitments are made.(a) (TRRL)
