OPTIMISING SHIPBOARD NOISE REDUCTION MEASURES
The trend towards direct requirements for shipboard noise levels has led to interest from shipowners in ensuring that noise requirements are met at the contract stage. By introducing direct requirements for noise levels on board ships it will, however, be necessary to base the noise reduction on more advanced acoustic analyses and calculations. For this reason, special shipboard "noise control programs" have been developed, the purpose being to determine at the design stage in which areas the noise level is excessive and by how much it must be reduced in order to comply with the actual requirements. The reliability of the results from such programs depends, however, on the input data describing induced structure-borne and air-borne sound from the noise sources, the damping and transmission in the steel structure and the acoustical parameters for the various accommodation spaces and engine-rooms. It is therefore important that such data are available with a satisfactory degree of accuracy. A data bank for acoustical information is of great importance in this respect. Today we observe increasing use of such programs, giving substantial improvements in acoustic effectiveness and cost reduction.
