TWO STAGE TURBOCHARGING FOR M.A.N.'S MEDIUM SPEED 32/36 ENGINE

M.A.N. has taken a novel approach in applying the concept to its new L/V 32/36 medium speed four-stroke engine which, in single-stage turbocharged mode, offers an output per cylinder of 370 kW (500 bhp) at rev/min. Two-stage turbocharging of this 320 mm bore/360 mm stroke design has been successfully operated on the 12 V 32/36T engine at Augsburg for about a year, exploiting a simple M.A.N. developed system whose main feature is a variable-pitch nozzle ring upstream of the high pressure turbine which permits flow area variation as a function of engine load. The results obtained are claimed to demonstrate that output can be boosted considerably, without detriment to the basically standard engine components, while yielding substantially lower exhaust gas soot at part load and better acceleration, without starting problems. The success of these results and the support from licensee Mitsubishi in Yokohama, which has been testing a two-stage turbocharged 12V 40/45T engine for some months, has encouraged M.A.N. to consider the introduction of the relevant models with two-stage turbocharging into the general programme and certainly to quote on special applications such as naval vessels or small high speed commercial ships. M.A.N. and MHI will meantime co-operate on further development of this project which is described in detail here by the West German Company's engineers.
