LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN ELECTRIC TRACTION WITHIN THE BELGIAN RAILROAD SYSTEM SCNB

NEUESTE ENTWICKLUNG DES ELEKTRISCHEN ZUGBETRIEBES BEI DER SNCB

The Belgian railroad system is described, 32.5% of its network is electrified with 3000 v dc. The present electrification program will increase this percentage to 50%. Public power stations and the public power supply network exclusively feed the railroad substations. All substations are equipped with silicon diodes combined in standardized 4200 kw units. The design of the overhead contact system has been improved, in order to upgrade the system for maximum speeds up to 160 km/h which will be permitted on some main lines in the near future. After tests of thyristor chopper on an electric railroad car, and after technical solutions have been found, in order to eliminate all disturbing interference of the signaling and telecommunication facilities, the SNCB has definitely adopted thyristor control for traction purposes. All new tractive units which have been built since 1970 have been fitted with thyristor chopper control.
