POLING PILE HOOD PROTECTS BUILDING AGAINST SETTLEMENT
Protection against settlement of a 100-year-old building became necessary during the construction of an escalator tunnel for the Tyne and Wear rapid transit system in the U. K. The method selected, described in the article, involved the construction of a parabolic arch of poling piles over the escalator shaft to form a shield while tunnelling proceeded.
