CONTRACTOR MEETS CHALLENGE OF CABLING GLASGOW'S UNDERGROUND
Problems encountered in the installation of all cabling for railway traction, signalling and control are described. One contractor, Alex Robertson of Glasgow was responsible for the complete P.S. 2M contract. Work on the renewal and improvement of Glasgow's Underground, originally a cable-hauled system opened in 1896, electrified in 1935 using a 600V DC third rail configuration, began in 1977. Traffic control measures and pedestrianisation have increased the importance of the underground, which carried some 14 million passengers a year in 1977. It forms a key link with other parts of Glasgow's integrated passenger transport system. Trains are scheduled at three minute intervals, when fully operational, with a minimum time of 12 minutes between any two points on the circuit. Because of the small clearances in the tunnel, a computer program was used to calculate the optimum track line and to produce a "kinematic" envelope template which was clamped on to a railcar and used during the contract to check the clearance. Bad working conditions and a tight work schedule are other problems described.
