TRAFFIC SIGNALS AT JUNCTIONS

Control by traffic lights is the most significant measure taken at junctions. Before the lights are installed the structural and traffic situation must be checked by means of traffic surveys, accident studies and observations of traffic. Traffic light control is necessary if the junction is hard to recognize, has poor visibility when there are four or more lanes, has a high traffic volume and frequent accidents. Based on preliminary studies a signal plan is presented. The possible ways of controlling traffic signals and the prerequisites for "green wave" or linked signals are discussed. Particular attention has to be paid to public passenger transport, cc cyclist traffic and pedestrians. If more than 5 accidents having the same cause occur at a junction in one year, the junction should be checked and specific points investigated. (TRRL)
