SUBMARINE ROAD TUNNELS CAN BECOME LESS EXPENSIVE THAN BRIDGES IF THE LENGTH IS NOT MORE THAN 2.5-3 TIMES THE LENGTH OF THE BRIDGE
UNDERSJOEISKE VEGTUNNELER KAN BLI BILLIGERE ENN BRU HVIS LENGDEN IKKE ER MERE ENN 2.5-3 GANGER LENGDEN AV AKTUELL BRU
Submarine tunnels for road traffic are usually associated with tubes of concrete or steel buried in sediments on the sea or river floor. Such constructions are worldwide the most commonly used alternative to a conventional bridge when roads are planned to cross rivers, fjords or straits. Lately alternative solutions including submerged floating tubes have also been investigated in Norway. In general, however, construction costs for submerged tubes are rather high. This fact prohibits the use of such solutions in Norway, considering the funds available for road construction purposes. Submarine tunnels in rock will however under favourable conditions constitute a more preferable solution. In certain cases such a tunnel may even represent the only economic solution, in other cases it may represent an alternative to constructing a conventional bridge. A review of present tunnel projects in Norway is given. (TRRL)
