NOTIONS OF LIMIT STATE AND CRITICAL STATE AND THEIR PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS TO THE STUDY OF CLAYS
LES CONCEPTS D'ETAT LIMITE ET D'ETAT CRITIQUE ET LEURS APPLICATIONS PRATIQUES A L'ETUDE DES ARGILES
Limit state and critical state notions are powerful tools for solving most of the practical geotechnical problems concerning compressible clays. It is shown that the limit state of natural clay represents in fact its strength, deformability and creep. An analysis is made of the practical implications of these behaviour characteristics as regards the interpretation of ordinary laboratory and in-situ tests, the design of retaining structures, and the stability and settlement of embankments built on compressible soil.
