ISOLATED INJURIES TO THE SMALL INTESTINE RESULTING FROM SAFETY BELTS

ISOLIERTE DUENNDARMVERLETZUNGEN INFOLGE SICHERHEITSGURT

Injuries to the small intestine occur only rarely with three point - automatic - safety belts, and occur frequently with lap belts. The clinical symptoms indicating a small intestine perforation, frequently occurred after a delay. Where peritonitis occurs and paralytic ileus develops no difficulty arises regarding the diagnosis of an intestine perforation. The genesis of traumatic small intestine rupture and the accident mechanism in the case of seat belt syndrome is discussed; an actual case is reported. For carrying out the isolation of a small intestine rupture, the topographical relationships to the abdominal wall and the spinal column play a particularly important part, as does the structure of the abdominal wall, the peculiarities of the intestinal wall and its container and the function and filling condition of the organ.
