GLASS INJURIES TO CAR OCCUPANTS AND OTHER ROAD USERS

GLASVERLETZUNGEN BEIM INNEREN UND AEUSSEREN VERKEHRSTEILNEHMER

Injuries specifically due to glass can be subdivided as follows: (1) injuries following impact with the screen without fracture, (2) injuries due to impact with fracture, (3) injuries due to penetration of the screen by the head, (4) injuries caused by remaining fragments to the drooping head. Examination of 500 traffic accidents involving personal injury showed that of 623 injured persons 23.0% sustained glass injuries. 71 drivers were injured by the windscreen and by the side window. Similarly 50 passengers were injured by the windscreen and 5 by the side window. Furthermore 10 cases of injury caused by the glass of the windscreen to pedestrians hit by the vehicle were observed. The injury spectrum of damage caused by fragments of safety glass ranged from punctate lesions to the epithelium to fatal severing of the carotid artery. It is pointed out, that the major proportion of injuries from glass must be regarded as avoidable, if contact with the glass can be prevented by relatively simple means. Among these can be cited a stable passenger compartment, properly functioning support systems (safety belts with three-point suspension) and a windscreen of laminated glass. (TRRL)
