MOISTURE CONDITION TEST FOR ASSESSING THE ENGINEERING BEHAVIOUR OF EARTHWORK MATERIAL
A test has been developed for the rapid measurement of a "moisture condition value" (mcv) of earthwork material. It is intended as a means of assessing the suitability of earthwork materials for use in embankments while avoiding the measurement of moisture content with its associated delays. It has been found that the performance of earthmoving plant can be related to mcv, and relations between undrained shear strength of remoulded soil and mcv have been established. There are strong possibilities that CBR can be predicted from mcv and that a new method of soil classification can be based on the characteristics of the moisture condition calibration line (the straight line relation between moisture content and mcv). The possible applications of the moisture condition test in the prediction of the relative effects of wet weather on different soils and the degrees of difficulty of compacting different soils are also discussed.
