An evaluation of the lane change execution models in traffic simulations

Traffic simulation models are often used to analyse the performance of roadway traffic, safety and transport systems. An important part of these models is the representation of lane changing. Lane changing models are one of the basic driver behaviour interaction. The lane change models incorporated into existing traffic simulations focus mainly on the lane change generation and rarely take the lane change execution into account. This paper explores the lane change execution models in several micro-simulations (VISSIM & AIMSUN). It compares these to real data and a model of lane change execution. More specifically, the evaluation of lane change execution compares the results of a model of lane change execution, simulation model outputs and observed data for passenger cars and heavy vehicles separately. This study assesses the results from lane change execution model and the real-life data to see the improvement of the model to the simulation output. The results for both passenger cars and heavy vehicles show that with employing the lane change execution models the output distribution is closer to the observation distribution than the current simulation output distribution.
