COMPACTION: WORKING TO A FIRM BASIS

Compaction is needed to provide a firm and durable wearing course for many surfacing applications. Some improved procedures for rolling on roads are discussed. Brief specifications are given for most vibrating plates, tampers and rollers used by local authorities. Towed rollers are excluded. Methods of increasing the density of dense roadbase and basecourse material in the wheelpath regions are discussed. The importance of project management and site supervision are stressed. Factors affecting the choice of small vibratory plates and tampers are examined. A wide range of pedestrian controlled vibrating is available together with the smaller type of 'ride-on' rollers. One or both rollers may vibrate on tandem machines. Applications of each type are discussed. Heavyweight vibratory rollers with roll widths of up to 2 M are also examined. Tables of all types of plant specifications are included together with an index of makers and distributors. (TRRL)
