BACKGROUND TO PROTECTIVE COATINGS
The common methods of preventing corrosion of structural steel by the application of coatings are classified and described in the following groups: (1) chemical modifications of polymers to improve solubility: this group of coatings uses well established natural or synthetic polymers, chemical modifications for their application and modifying components to improve their compatibility; (2) alkyd resins which consist of a synthetic polymer onto which drying oil fractions are attached for hardness and durability; (3) two-component systems in which chemicals have the ability to react progressively together to form complex polymers and synthetic polymers like polythene, pvc and pva; and (4) chemical inhibition by coatings in which corrosion inhibitors impede the rusting process.
