LINER SHIPPING AND GENERAL CARGO TRANSPORT
This study is focussed on four questions: (1) what tendencies have dominated the development of international liner shipping and what are the perspectives for the future? (2) what interdependencies guide the consignor in his choice of transport alternative and by what models and methods can they be studied? (3) what tendencies dominated modal and port redistribution of general and break-bulk cargo flows in the foreign trade of an industrialized country like Sweden? And (4) how useful is an econometric approach in the analysis of modal and port distribution of general cargo flows? The study shows that inland transport, mainly the development of road transport, has been the main reason for the structural changes within liner shipping on short routes. Technical innovations within freight handling and political factors led to structural changes within the transocean liner shipping. This resulted in increased protectionism and limited the activities of the liner shipowners and forced them into considerable horizontal and vertical co-operation. In this connection the evaluations of the transport buyers of the transport alternatives has become a more important element in the demand study, especially on routes where the competition between inland, air and sea transport is strong. The actual development as well as the econometric model study of the Swedish transport market confirmed the increased role of lorry transport in international general cargo transport.
