THE NATURE AND IMPORTANCE OF ECONOMIC LOSSES DUE TO UNITIZATION OF CONTAINERS IN THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS

The authors state that the major steps in their research were to:-1) estimate the future of containerisation; 2) identify and classify losses and damages resulting from container use and estimate these risks in probability and magnitude, and 3) reflect on the means of reducing these risks or protecting against them. They review the development of intermodal containerisation and, having identified major uncertainties, define relevant trends in the evolution of containerised trade to 1988. The third section presents an evaluation of the economic risks associated with containerisation, one part relating to the container itself and the other to the cargo. Section four presents reflections on risk prevention and control. Among the appendices are a glossary of terms, containerised cargo losses statistics from the International Union of Marine Insurance and a short bibliography.
