HOLDING COMPANIES, COMMON CARRIERS, AND PUBLIC POLICY
The conglomerate trend in the U.S. with respect to transportation is reviewed along with the arguments for and against conglomerates controlling common carriers. The opposition fears anticompetitive effects and insufficient allocation of resources to transportation facilities. Certain diversified activities related directly to transportation and supporting facilities could be of high value to the public interest. It is contended that ICC should have authority to control financial transactions found contrary to public interest.
