THE DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR OF OFFSHORE PLATFORM CRANES
In this paper, which is particularly concerned with crane problems in hoisting loads onto a fixed platform from a supply boat, the Author (of the Dept. of Offshore Engineering, Heriot-Watts University) discusses the difficulties involved in such operations, surveys the limited amount of theoretical information available, and presents simplified crane-system model for use in calculating the dynamic loads on a crane when it is lifting cargoes from the deck of a moving supply-boat. Typical results from calculations with the model show that the maximum dynamic loads on the crane system are, in general, much larger than is commonly supposed, and for North Sea applications it is suggested that dynamic factors (i.e., ratio of maximum loads to static loads) of at least 5 should be used in design. Although motion compensators can be used to reduce the loads, it is considered that these cranes should be safe in terms of permissible stress and fatigue life in the absence of such aids.
