WORKING TOWARDS A FLEXIBLE ROAD/RAIL CONTAINER TRANSFER SYSTEM
As a means of improving container transfer between road and rail vehicles, thereby increasing the attraction of container-carrying rail systems, British Rail's Research Department has been actively researching such methods for the past three years. A dual program of both hardware development and overall systems studies is being undertaken at Derby with the aim of identifying ways of competing more effectively with road transport and improving the benefits offered by containerized freight in both maritime and domestic markets. This article outlines the work carried out by British Rail to date.
