BUTTON BITS PROGRESS REPORT. DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE OF BUTTON BITS FOR PERCUSSIVE DRILLING

The applications of button bits for the various types of percussive drilling applications, particularly in conjunction with underground drill jumbos, are reviewed. Aspects of their design and maintenance are considered. The main features of a current down-the-hole button bit are described. Two or three basic designs are adequate for the market. Possible causes of failure, and their remedies are examined. Factors affecting their use in surface applications are discussed. Bits of 51 mm and 57 mm diameter are being used successfully for longhole drilling, giving the advantage of good penetration rates and longer life. The performance of drill steels and bits in Scandinavian heavy jumbo applications is illustrated, together with a comparison of blade and button bit lives. The use of the bit in light jumbos is examined, and costs of different drill string options are compared for small diameter drilling. Penetration rates of 38 mm bits are compared. Methods of resharpening button bits are compared. Advice is given to potential users on the factors affecting the choice of button bit. (TRRL)
