PUTTING IT UNDERGROUND IN NORWAY
The article discusses the many uses, apart from road and railway tunnels, of underground constructions in Norway. Examples given include oil storage facilities, car parks, recreational facilities, power stations and sewage plants. Environmental and strategic considerations are important reasons for locating such facilities underground. A description is given of seven sewage tunnelling projects being constructed underground at Bergen. Phase 1 of the rock tunnelling works were completed, using a Gardner-Denver 3-boom hydraulic drilling jumbo, by drill and blast methods. The jumbo was able to work on three faces concurrently so that while charging, blasting and spoil removal operations were taking place on one face, the jumbo was moved to another face. (TRRL)
