THE CENTRALLY INTEGRATED TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM (CITRAC) (A) STUDIES AND OBJECTIVES (B) CONTROL PRINCIPLES

(A) This traffic control system (CITRAC) is recommended as a result of major developments in the Glasgow area since the city's highway plan was published in 1965. The purpose of CITRAC, to ensure smooth traffic flow on the motorway network is described, and particularly its role in case of emergency. It is suggested that the successful application of area traffic control in Central Glasgow indicates that major benefits would be derived from extending the system, also providing priority for emergency vehicles. The highway plan envisaged strict control of car parking in the city centre, and a car park direction sign system could be incorporated in CITRAC. (B) A brief description is given of area traffic control and the development of traffic control computer programmes. A description of the complexity of motorway traffic diversion emphasises the need for using a pre-planned programme, foreseeing all eventualities, with a processor. The remote control of car parking by the operation of secret signs by CITRAC and automatic traffic counting. The overall picture is presented of a multitude of sources of traffic information all at or near the point at which vehicles are being controlled and/or monitored, and the ultimate configuration of the system is illustrated by diagram.
