ALL CLEAR AHEAD WHEN BELLS GO DOWN

A trial has begun in Northampton to demonstrate, compare and evaluate various methods of giving priority to emergency vehicles travelling through an existing road network. The article describes the experimental design and instrumentation involved. Two basic systems are being evaluated, one designed for use at isolated signal junctions (evade) employing microwave signalling, and the other system, known as green wave, giving a computer controlled succession of green lights in a dense urban area. Journey time and accident statistics for appliances are being studied. Selective vehicle detection equipment and evade transmitters have been fitted to six fire appliances. Road loops are to be used to compile data on journey times between successive sites. The evade equipment will be used to detect the vehicle and update the computer with its position in the road network. Preliminary results show that the system is capable of providing accurate and reliable data on fire appliances behaviour in varying traffic conditions. (TRRL)
