NATIONAL HIGHWAY BYPASS OF A PROVINCIAL TOWN
This paper was presented at session 29-Transport Planning Case Studies. Community demands for the removal of highway traffic from the main street of the provincial town of nambour (population 9000) led to an investigation of alternative locations for a deviation incorporating a highway bypass of the town. A number of sensitive and contentious issues were raised, including some based on environmental grounds. An environmental impact study was carried out. The paper is based on one of the first relatively major highway deviations in a rural area investigated by the Queensland Main Roads Department after the introduction of Queensland's environmental control legislation. The environmental impact study was carried out as an integral part of the route location process by one of the department's decentralised district office organisations (TRRL)
