OPTIMAL ROUTE LOCATION - A THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK AND ITS USE
This paper was presented at Session 28 - Transport Planning Techniques 2. This paper describes the methods and results of an investigation into the applicability and usefulness of a variational approach to the determination of an optimal route location (Nicholson 1973). The variational approach involves firstly the use of an extremal field procedure to search a broad feasible region and produce bands of interest, and then a variational calculus procedure to explore a band of interest and generate location bands which can be investigated using a program such as ICES roads in order to produce a final alignment. The application of this variational approach to a real problem is described and the results are compared with those obtained independently via a traditional approach. The paper describes the use of the method for determining an optimal route with constraints on capital availability, for deriving a priority order for staged realignment of a route, and for assisting the determination of design standards that are consistent with the economic circumstances.
