RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN TRANSPORT

The article reviews the contribution of research and development in transport. While advances have taken place in all transport modes by air, ground and sea, transport must itself change in order to provide satisfactory service in a changing world. It is important to ensure that transport continues to play its part in supporting further progress. Because of social and economic aspects there are few transport problems for which a technical solution alone is adequate. This reflects the widening impact of mechanised transport on society as facilities for moving people and freight cannot be planned and operated except as part of a broad, overall approach. Well organised research and development can help achieve sound and acceptable transport planning decisions and effective engineering practices.
