A VITAL PARTNERSHIP: FREIGHT CAR UTILIZATION AND PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION
Freight car utilization is a major factor in a railroad's ability to achieve return on invested capital. Despite continuing programs for improving utilization, car cycle time has not responded positively because of labor restrictions, branch-line operations, imbalance in loaded movements and limitations on terminal facilities. Fundamental changes are needed in car handling if further financial deterioration and loss of more markets is to be avoided.
