With the aid of characteristic examples from the Daimler-Benz range of us export models for the years 1968-1978, which incorporated built-in series production exhaust fume control systems, a picture is built up of the increasingly elaborate technical measures required to comply with legal exhaust fume control requirements. In the early years 1968-1971 it was only necessary to fit additional components to the existing range of engines in order to comply with the regulations. From 1972 onwards it was necessary to discontinue petrol-engined versions with mechanical gearboxes, and to provide for a drastic reduction in compression ratios over the whole range of engines. From model-year 1977 the six-cylinder carburettor engine was replaced by a petrol-injection version, and in model-year 1978 the last carburettor engined model was dropped from the us export range. Reference is made to the considerable increase in manufacturing costs, in running costs and in maintenance costs of the vehicles. (TRRL)
