TECHNICAL NOTE. THE SHORE HARDNESS OF ROCK
The shore hardness (sh) of a specimen is determined from the rebound height of a diamond or tungsten-carbide tipped hammer released from rest on to a horizontal smooth surface. The arithmetic mean of at least 20 readings taken at random on a ground surface of the rock sample is usually taken. The technical note describes work on the effect of specimen size and the effect of moisture on sh. It has been established that sh is dependent on the volume of the specimen tested and not simply on length or area. A minimum specimen volume of 40 cu cm is suggested. The mean of at least 50 readings made on 5 specimens can then be taken as the shore hardness of a rock. Wet specimens usually give lower values of sh. Errors may arise if edge readings are included in the arithmetic mean of the shore hardness. (TRRL)
