SLOPE STABILITY BY VEGETATION FROM A CIVIL ENGINEER'S POINT OF VIEW
DIE GRUENVERBAUUNG AUS DER SICHT DES BAUINGENIEURS
On the western motorway entry at Vienna an area of land is crossed which is in danger of slipping. Drainage measures undertaken initially by planting specially selected plant types were unsuccessful alone and surface slips have become evident. Engineering-biological works must therefore be combined to the required degree with engineering construction works such as retaining walls, drainage adits, wells, stone and gravel counterfort drains. In the motorway administration area of lower Austria since 1958 a special division has been set up to deal with landscape works. With appropriately invested finance experience was gained on this topic. For continued success of slope stability vegetation operations it is very important that the necessary measures (planting-out, maintenance) are carried out early enough such that vegetation is already established when the system is handed over to traffic and hence fits into the landscape and also that erosion protection and drainage measures are effective. Recently large tree planting operations have become possible and these are carried out on motorway parking areas and service stations. These fulfil the purpose of an amenity providing also shaded areas, directly after the project becomes operational. (TRRL)
