THE INFLUENCE OF DRIVER AND OWNER ON VEHICLE NOISE

DER EINFLUSS VON FAHRER UND HALTER AUF DEN KRAFTFAHRZEUGLAERM

The noise emission of vehicles is influenced fundamentally by driving patterns and by the condition of the vehicle. Because the degree of noise caused by the internal combustion motor is relative to the number of revolutions per minute, the driver of a hand operated gear box vehicle has ample opportunity of influencing noise emission. A single private car in second gear at a speed of 40 to 50 km/h produces as much noise as four similar vehicles being driven in third gear. Many driver characteristics lead to unnecessary noise (cavalier starts at traffic signals, taking bends with screaming tyres, warming-up the vehicle). Future testing procedures for noise measurement should be based upon practical average driving methods of the various vehicle types and not upon the operational conditions with the greatest possible noise emission. Even more than from the choice of operational conditions noise can be increased by altered vehicle parts, and this relates not only to parts changed due to defects or old-age but also to those added for the purpose of changing the performance of the vehicle. Reference is made to the double role of the vehicle owner as a causer of noise and as a peace-loving citizen. In this connection mention is made of the problem of motivation towards noise-conscious driving methods and the possibility of avoiding noise-increasing manipulation. Finally general advice is given on information and motivation of publicity in respect of traffic noise. (TRRL)
