LASER-OPTICAL DISTANCE MEASUREMENT IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
LASEROPTISCHE FERNMESSVERFAHREN IM UMWELTSCHUTZ
The progress of laser research and of rapid data-processing have made possible the design and construction of distance measuring equipment which can be used to make quantitative and qualitative measurements over a wide area of the spatial and temporal distribution of gaseous air pollutants. The most effective form for this purpose is the infra-red laser. As compared with conventional measuring techniques the laser method affords obvious advantages; e.g. the large volume of data which can be collected at low cost, and the fact that direct contact between the measuring instrument and the object to be measured is unnecessary. The conclusion of the planned test programme, which in addition to the experimental demonstration of the method will also include the practical application of the method under field conditions to legally acceptable standards, may constitute an important advance in environmental protection.
