HOLIDAY AND RECREATION TRAVEL 1976/77. A PREVIEW OF THE RESULTS OF A MICRO-CENSUS

The most important results are reported of a 0.1 per cent budget census (micro-census) carried out in May 1977 concerning the holiday travel and recreation travel activities of residents of Federal Germany. Those journeys regarded as holiday or recreation travel were trips lasting 5 or more days undertaken for the purpose of relaxation, recreation or convalescence and which were started between April 1976 and March 1977. About 36 million holiday journeys were undertaken during this period by the approximately 61 million inhabitants of Federal Germany. Of these about 45 per cent were in Federal Germany and approximately 55 per cent abroad. By far most journeys took place in the holiday months of July and August. June and September which have good weather, lie far behind these. As a means of transport two-thirds use a car. In air traffic overseas flights clearly predominated and in rail travel (approximately 15 per cent) home journeys were more common. 60 per cent of all journeys were individually planned and carried out by those making the holiday. Only in 15 per cent of all cases were the services of travel agents used, but the proportion of those travelling abroad using these was considerably higher. The holiday duration which occurred most was 8 to 14 days, followed by 3 week holidays (15 to 21 days). Short holidays of up to 7 days were more frequent than the 4 week holiday. For holiday accommodation - especially for holidays abroad - hotels and similar were mainly used. Most holidays were spent in Austria, Italy, Spain/portugal, Jugoslavia and France. About 30 per cent of all holidays involved other countries in which far off and "exotic" places were surprisingly often chosen as the holiday objective. (TRRL)
