SOME EXPERIENCE OF PREFERENTIAL TREATMENTS FOR HIGH OCCUPANCY VEHICLES
This paper was presented at Session 31 - Traffic Systems and Analysis 2. Over the past five years there has been considerable work carried out in New South Wales into the various preferential treatments available to the transport planner. This paper details the experience obtained in New South Wales in the use of transit lanes and in the application of bus priority techniques at signalised intersections. This paper also examines some overseas work in the provision of preferential treatments for high occupancy vehicles. The paper concludes that priority lanes and passive bus priority at signalised intersections return considerable community benefits for the relatively small investment required for these schemes. It is also concluded that, if the aim is to minimise person delay, active bus priority schemes at signalised intersections are a poor investment of public funds. (TRRL)
