Making Strides 2018 State Report Cards on Support for Walking, Bicycling, and Active Kids and Communities

This report shares 2018 report cards for all fifty states and the District of Columbia on the actions and policy decisions of state-level legislators and agencies to support physical activity in their communities. The benefits of walking, bicycling, and general physical activity are well-proven for children, teens, and adults. There are several reasons it makes sense to chart progress at the state level. Firstly, states are explicitly charged with ensuring the well-being of their residents. Secondly, states are familiar with the specific challenges and opportunities faced by individual communities. Finally, in many states, local communities require state authorization in order to take action on health and other challenges. The four core topic areas graded are: 1) complete streets and active transportation; 2) safe routes to school and active transportation funding; 3) active neighborhoods and schools; and 4) state physical activity planning. The average score across all states was 95.8 out of a possible total of 200 points. While there are promising signs of improvement, tremendous opportunity remains to enact new, health-promoting, evidence-based state policies to encourage physical activity.
