THE USE OF EXPANDED CLAY AS A MINERAL AGGREGATE IN ASPHALT CONCRETE
EL EMPLEO DE ARCILLA EXPANDIDA COMO AGREGADO MINERAL EN CONCRETOS ASFALTICOS
In 1975 the National Department carried out the reconstruction of sections of Route 188 in the Province of Buenos Aires. Among these were experimental sections constructed with asphalt concrete using expanded clay as a mineral aggregate. A control section was constructed of conventional asphalt concrete enabling engineers to make comparative measurements of deformation, deflection, and density. The experiment included sections of expanded clay asphalt concrete for the base only, and for base and wearing surface together. Total thickness was 21 cm in both experimental and control sections. The author describes the performance of the experimental section and provides construction details and information on relative costs compared to conventional hot-mix asphalt concrete. (Author)
