OPERATOR FATIGUE IN VARIOUS MODES OF TRANSPORTATION ACCIDENTS

This paper is an attempt to describe a phenomenon which is an acknowledged contributing factor in accidents which occur in various modes of transportation. It is also an attempt to summarize recent work, some of it not yet published, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation in an effort to identify the magnitude of the problem posed by operator fatigue to safety in transportation. Finally, it may form a basis for examining some of the operating rules set by the Department of Transportation for various modes of commercial transportation.
