DYNAMIC TESTING OF CLAY SUBGRADES FOR PAVEMENT DESIGN

DYNAMISK PROEVNING AV LEIRE FOR DIMENSJONERING AV VEGER

This thesis deals with dynamic testing of clay as a subgrade material. In order to simulate the dynamic stresses in the subgrade, triaxial tests with pulsating loads were carried out on undrained, undisturbed specimens from two different sites in the Trondheim rogion. A servo-controlled electrohydraulic test equipment (mts) was used for the test. A triaxial chamber was specially designed and developed for this purpose. A program for dynamic testing of clay in the triaxial chamber for road design purposes has also been developed. The main feature of this program is running of multiple stage tests exploring the effects of one parameter while the other test conditions are kept constant. It was found that the test results could best be interpreted in terms of effective stresses. Well-known basic models were mainly used. However, some further developments in interpretation of the test results were made and several interesting relationships were derived. (TRRL)
