FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SLOW SPEED DIESEL
The paper gives a brief presentation of design features of slow-speed diesel engines, while emphasizing combustion chamber configurations and scavenging principles. Based on recent fuel comparison research from a test engine, the particular merits of slow-speed diesel for burning future low-grade fuels are discussed. The potentials for further development towards either improved fuel economy or higher engine rating are presented while referring to recent progress from exploitation of various current design characteristics and principles.
